These are 3 great Traffic Exchanges I use for my blogs. They are reliable and if you are active you will indeed get traffic to your blogs from these exchanges. And by being active I mean surfing in the Traffic Exchanges. Now ExposeYourBlog and BlogClicker are manual Traffic Exchanges, therefore you will have to click on a symbol to see the next blog. However BlogSurfer.us is an AutoExchange, which means that you do not have to do anything but simply have the exchange open in a window.

Now my most successful blog so far is my personal blog, My Life in Sweden. Where I have learned that a good way to increase traffic and activity on that blog is by being an active participant myself on other peoples blogs. Meaning that when I visit other blogs I try to leave relevant comments and follow them in some form. Like through Google Friend Connect, Networked Blogs, Twitter or Facebook for instance. Now backlinks are important for many reasons. Like exposure, pagerank and traffic. And there are a lot of different ways to gain backlinks. But the most important thing I think you should keep in mind when building backlinks is to have a clear vision of what you expect from your backlink source. For instance when I add my URLs to Link Directories I do so more for the actual backlink than exposure and traffic. However when my URLs are featured in articles or blog posts, exposure and traffic are my main goals.
