My PayPal Account Was Hacked And All My Money Stolen!

My PayPal Account Was Hacked And All My Money Stolen!
Watch out for hackers out there in Cyberspace! Image courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net.

Yes, it is true. On April 1st (no joke) my PayPal account was hacked and all the money I had in it was transferred out of my PayPal account. I found out about this when I started to receive emails about the transactions, and other activity in my PayPal account, to the email I had connected to the account. At first when this happened I could log into my PayPal account, but after a few minutes while I was in there the hacker changed my password and security questions. Once that was done I had no way to access my PayPal account anymore, which really freaked me out!

What I was most worried about was the fact that I had connected my bank account and my credit card to my PayPal account. So my worst fear was that the hacker could get more money from me through those sources. And because this whole thing happened on a Sunday evening I had no way to get in touch with any PayPal staff via phone, PayPal's customer service in Sweden was closed. Yikes! Quite frustrating to say the least. All I could do was to email PayPal's customer service and let them know what had happened.

But, once I was able to phone PayPal's Swedish customer service on Monday morning and talk to someone there everything was resolved. I got great service and reassurance that my money would be reinstated to my account - which it immediately was. A huge a relief! Although I would have wished that there was a way to contact PayPal via phone as soon as this had happened. Fortunately though, the hacker had not tried to withdraw any money from my bank account or from my credit card - phew!

So, even though my PayPal account was hacked and all my money was stolen, for about 24 hours, I must say that once I got a hold of personnel from PayPal I did get help to change my password, stop all the illegal transactions and to get all my money back. Which is why I still use PayPal today, although I no longer have my bank account nor credit card connected to the account.

Needless to say, this experience has taught me to become more cautious when it comes to online money transfers. Because you are really not safe from hackers anywhere out there...
