The Benefits Of Using Commenting As A Way Of Marketing Your Blog/Website

There are many benefits with leaving, receiving and responding to comments on blogs and websites, especially if you want to use commenting as a way of marketing your blog/website. In my experience, some benefits with commenting are;

- Backlink building
- Increase in traffic
- Growth of blog network
- An active blog/website people want to return to

Therefore I will explain more about how these benefits have worked for me in this post. But first I want to explain a bit about how to best leave a comment on a blog post or an article, because if you just leave a comment without any relevance to the story it is left on - it will most likely be deleted. Which completely defeats the purpose of leaving a comment as a way of marketing your blog/website. So first of all, all comments you write should be relevant to each blog post or article where they are submitted.

A relevant comment is one that refer to the content in the story somehow, but it does not have to be a long comment. One or two sentences is enough, though if you connect to the content a longer substantial comment is always appreciated. For example, two good, simple and relevant comments to leave on this post could be;

"Great and useful post. I learned a lot I did not know before. Thank you for sharing!"

or

"Good advice about how to get the most out of commenting, both when it comes to responding to comments as well as leaving comments. Thank you!"

These are two good comments because they are straight to the point and refer to this content, I know I would be happy and appreciate receiving either one of these comments. Which in turn also would make me want to visit the commentator to do the same in return, hence the commentator has now gained a new visitor and comment/s on his/her blog - simply by leaving a relevant comment here. The commentator has also gained a good backlink from this blog and possibly a new blog pal (growth in blog network).

Another good idea when leaving comments as a way of marketing your blog/website is to leave them on blogs/websites with similar content as yours. Because if your blog/website is in the same category as the one where you have left a comment, the probability is high that the people who will find your blog/website through that source will be interested in your content as well. Therefore, leaving relevant comments on relevant blogs/websites are the the first two steps when it comes to marketing your blog/website through comments.

The third step to take for this marketing method to work is to make sure that when you leave a comment you have a link back to your blog/website in the comment title, there is usually a box for that in most comment sections. This is of course a crucial step, because if you don't leave a link back to your blog/website there is no way for people to find your blog/website through your comment. And if you comment through a Google Profile, IntenseDebate Profile or similar, make sure you have a link back to your URL in that profile. There is usually a box there for that as well.

So I have now explained some of the benefits with leaving relevant comments on relevant blogs/websites and how relevant commenting can work as a way of backlink building, traffic increase and blog network growth. All necessary things if you want to get the word out there about your blog/website and get people involved on it. Which leads me to the benefit of an active blog/website people want to return to, where I think responding to comments on your blog/website plays an important part.

Now when I first started blogging in 2010 I was not sure if I should respond to all comments or not? Therefore I did not do so from the beginning. But when I started to respond to all comments I noticed an increase in the number of comments I received, which is why I then continued to do so.

Also, based on my own impressions of other blogs where the blogger always responds to his/her comments, a two way communication on a blog shows that the blogger cares about his/her readers. It also it gives the impression to new visitors that the blog is an active and well maintained blog. Furthermore, again speaking from a commentators perspective, I know I love getting a personal response to comments I leave on other blogs. In fact, the blogs I frequently return to are the ones where the blogger respond to all his/her comments.

So, using commenting as a way of marketing your blog/website does work - if they are handled and left in a good way. Another great benefit with this marketing method is that it is free, all it takes is some time. And how much time depends entirely on what you are willing to spend on it. Either way, in my experience, time spent on leaving relevant comments and responding to comments is time well spent. Because over the years I have always seen an increase in visits, comments and blog connections soon after I have been on a comment expedition in the blogosphere. Which is why I chose to write this post. :)
